MOSCOW. The findings from Russian academic scientists are set to be indispensable for the successful development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR). Their research will be particularly critical for generating a long-term climate forecast, which will, in turn, enable accurate calculations for the future demand for nuclear icebreakers. This was revealed by Gennady Krasnikov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), in an interview given on September 19, 2025.

«One of the most pressing challenges related to the future of the Northern Sea Route is establishing a reliable, long-term climate forecast,» Krasnikov stated. «It is essential that we have a clear understanding of what the ice conditions will be. This clarity is paramount because new generations of nuclear icebreakers are engineered to withstand specific ice loads. Therefore, we need to anticipate the expected ice loads for the next 10, 15, or even 20 years, ensuring that the technical capabilities of our icebreakers are perfectly matched to these evolving conditions.»
