Preview Anomalous Cold Weather Returns to Moscow

Residents of the Moscow region should prepare for unstable and cool weather in the coming days. Following a brief dry spell over the weekend with temperatures reaching up to 22°C, rain and cooler temperatures (down to 15-16°C) are forecast to return on Monday. Forecasters predict that the beginning of July will remain cold, with no immediate sign of hot summer weather.

During the last weekend of June, temperatures in Moscow will remain below average. The air will warm up to 22°C during the day, but nighttime temperatures could drop to 8°C. However, no precipitation is expected until Sunday evening.

From Monday, temperatures will fall again, dropping to 15°C, and rain will begin. Here’s what Alexey Safonov, a meteorologist and weather observer for the Meteoweb project, says:

On Saturday and Sunday, we`ll have a stable 20-22°C without precipitation. Only on Sunday evening will some rain pass through. After that, by Monday, temperatures will drop again to very low values for June – only 15-16°C during the day, and around 10°C at night. It might even be lower in the northwestern parts of the region. Overall, the week starting Monday will be very cool. There might be rain on Monday, perhaps Tuesday, then it will warm up slightly to 22°C. But on Monday, as I said, it will be 15-16°C. By Thursday or Friday of next week, if nothing changes, we`ll see 24-26°C. But then on Saturday or Sunday, there will be another cooling trend – classic Murphy`s Law. Rain will arrive, but this isn`t certain; everything will likely be revised after Monday. Most likely, the first genuinely hot days, 27-30°C, will come around July 10th. So it could be the 10th, or maybe even the entire first ten days will be cold. That`s also a possibility, but we can`t see that far ahead yet. It seems we`re stuck in this cold weather, and there`s no end in sight yet.

According to Roman Vilfand, Scientific Director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, while everyone is anticipating summer, the average temperature over the past 25 days has actually been completely normal. He noted that temperatures in Moscow were high at the beginning of the month, but are currently below normal. «Formally speaking, the average temperature in June is currently forecast to be 0.5 degrees below the norm,» Vilfand stated.
