Surface of the ocean floor near Axial Seamount.
Scientists are predicting that the **Axial Seamount**, an active underwater volcano situated hundreds of kilometers off the coast of Oregon, USA, in the Pacific Ocean, could experience a new eruption before the end of this year. This forecast comes amid a notable increase in seismic activity, as reported by Fox television, citing geophysicist William Chadwick from Oregon State University.
The Axial Seamount is recognized as one of the most dynamic submarine volcanoes globally, with prior eruptions documented in 1998, 2011, and 2015. Experts closely monitoring the volcano anticipate its next major event to occur by late 2025. Dr. Chadwick confirmed this expectation, stating, «I anticipate its eruption by the end of the year.»
He further clarified that the anticipated eruption is not expected to be explosive, thus mitigating any risk of a tsunami. Data collected in June revealed more than two thousand tremors at the volcano within a single day, with hundreds of seismic events continuing daily thereafter. Moreover, the seafloor surrounding Axial has shown uplift to levels last observed just before its 2015 eruption, a clear indication of ongoing magma movement beneath the surface.
The Axial Seamount holds significance as the site of the world`s inaugural underwater volcanic observatory. Its activity is continuously monitored by research teams from Oregon State University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
