Recent cyber incidents have highlighted significant vulnerabilities in Russia`s approach to safeguarding personal data, prompting calls for more robust legislative action.
According to Senator Andrey Klishas, who heads the Federation Council`s Committee on Constitutional Legislation, the recent wave of cyberattacks targeting Russian enterprises clearly indicates the inadequacy of current measures designed to protect citizens` personal information. He explicitly stated that even the implementation of turnover fines has proven insufficient in deterring these breaches and safeguarding data.
In response to the escalating threats, Senator Klishas announced that the Federation Council will continue its collaborative efforts with the Russian government to strengthen the legislative framework governing personal data security within the country.
This urgent call to action follows a series of high-profile cyber incidents. The «Semeiny Doktor» (Family Doctor) clinic network reportedly suffered a significant data loss, including its patient database, after a cyberattack. Similarly, the «Stolichki» pharmacy chain also fell victim to a digital intrusion. Furthermore, the national airline «Aeroflot» experienced a major technical disruption, which hackers claimed was a result of their actions, asserting that customer personal data had been compromised. However, Roskomnadzor, the federal media and IT oversight body, has not yet confirmed the alleged compromise of Aeroflot`s client data.
