This alert comes in response to the introduction of Russian banking applications for contactless payments on iPhones. According to Nemkin, the significant user interest in these novel applications creates a fertile ground for malicious actors to distribute counterfeit software versions or launch phishing websites, all disguised as legitimate sources.
Nemkin outlined that prevalent fraudulent methods would involve sending deceptive links through messaging services and social media platforms. These links would deceitfully encourage users to install applications, often promoted as being «for convenience» or a means to «bypass App Store restrictions.» A particularly insidious threat also stems from individuals posing as «fake bank employees.» These imposters initiate calls under the pretense of assisting with app installation or activating new features, with the ultimate goal of gaining unauthorized remote access to users` phones.
In related news, Russia has previously explored the implementation of a compensation mechanism for damages incurred from fraudulent activities. This proposed system would hold telecommunication operators liable for reimbursing funds if their inaction or negligence contributed to the financial loss.
