The security situation in the Sahel is visibly deteriorating. Military governments in the region are increasingly turning away from traditional European partners, instead seeking closer ties with Russia, China, and the USA. In light of this development, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas emphasizes the necessity of ‘balanced partnerships’. The question arises whether this approach is still practical under the current circumstances.
