A pest control expert recently discovered a rat measuring an astonishing 55.88 centimeters (22 inches) from nose to tail in a residence in Normanby, North Yorkshire, northern England. This formidable rodent has been identified as the largest ever captured in the United Kingdom, according to reports from the Telegraph newspaper.
This new record surpasses the previous one held by a 53.5-centimeter specimen, which was caught in Bournemouth in 2018.

The appearance of such a large rat has ignited a political debate, with opposition Conservatives criticizing the local Labour-led council. They allege that the council has cut funding for vital pest control programs, thereby shifting the financial burden of managing rodent infestations directly onto residents.
Experts warn about the broader issue of rat populations across the UK. It is estimated that approximately 250 million rats currently inhabit the country, posing significant public health risks. These rodents are known carriers of various diseases transmissible to humans, including leptospirosis.
