Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova announced that the number of women of reproductive age in Russia is projected to decrease to 27 million by 2046. She stated that Russia is currently on a «declining trajectory for the main reproductive age population group.»

Speaking at a CPRF meeting, Golikova recalled that when the initial demographic policy concept was developed, the number of women in the reproductive age bracket was slightly over 39 million. She highlighted that this figure has now fallen to 34 million.

According to data presented by Ms. Golikova, the population group aged 20-29 is expected to reach 7.18 million people by 2026. Growth in this group is only anticipated to begin by 2038, when it could reach 9.38 million.

The first demographic policy concept was formulated in 2006, at which point the reproductive age female population was estimated at 39.4 million. Data from the strategy for implementing demographic policy shows a decline of 8.2% by 2013 and a further 5.4% drop by 2024, bringing the total to 34.2 million women. This strategy, approved by the government in March 2025, also includes a Rosstat forecast. It indicates that an increase in the number of women aged 20-29 (who account for 44% of all births) is not expected to commence until after 2026.
