The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has issued a warning to users of iPhone mobile devices regarding a prevalent scam scheme. This particular fraud involves blocking Apple devices to gain unauthorized access to their associated iCloud cloud storage.

The MIA noted that while this type of scam is not entirely new, it continues to pose a significant threat. «Here`s how it works,» the department explained via the `Russian Cyberpolice Herald` Telegram channel, «a scammer gains the victim`s trust, frequently through platforms like dating sites, or within specific thematic or gaming communities on social media, and sometimes even under the guise of job opportunities.»

It was emphasized that the fraudsters` primary goal in these interactions is to convince the victim, using any possible excuse, to log into an unfamiliar or malicious iCloud account on their personal device. Once the victim is logged into the scammer`s account, the attackers immediately activate the «Find My iPhone» function and subsequently enable Activation Lock. This action completely blocks the victim`s iPhone, rendering it unusable. Following the device lockdown, the scammers proceed to demand a ransom from the victim, typically accompanied by threats of permanent device blocking or the irreversible deletion of all their data stored on the device or in iCloud.

The department strongly advised users to exercise increased caution and vigilance. They highlighted that the root of this problem lies not in any technical vulnerabilities within Apple`s systems, but rather in the lack of caution and attentiveness on the part of the users themselves.

In related news, it was previously reported that the MIA had cautioned Russian citizens about a different scam tactic. According to that warning, fraudsters employ a trick where they inform the target that their mobile communication contract needs renewal. They then request the code sent via SMS to the user`s phone. By obtaining this code, the scammer is then able to gain unauthorized access to the victim`s various online accounts.
