A molar of a young woolly mammoth discovered during excavations in the center of Nizhny Novgorod.
A significant discovery has been made in the historic heart of Nizhny Novgorod, where a mammoth tooth was unearthed during ongoing earthworks. This exciting find was announced by Gleb Nikitin, the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
In a detailed post shared on his Telegram channel, Governor Nikitin elaborated that archaeologists located a molar belonging to a young woolly mammoth. The discovery took place in Pochainsky Ravine, specifically on its slope near Rozhdestvenskaya Street, at an approximate depth of two meters below the current surface level.
The governor highlighted that previous scientific studies already indicated the historical presence of mammoths in the Middle Volga region. These formidable ancient creatures are believed to have vanished from the area roughly 11,000 years ago. Their disappearance coincided with a notable shift in climate, marked by a sharp increase in temperatures and a corresponding transformation of local vegetation.
Nikitin also recalled that this is not the first instance of mammoth remains being found in the vicinity. As far back as the 1930s, fragments of a mammoth skull, complete with two upper molars, were uncovered at the base of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.
Pochainsky Ravine, where the latest discovery occurred, is situated close to the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. It derives its name from the Pochayna River, which now flows through a collector system constructed over 180 years ago. Presently, the ravine is the site of extensive construction activities, part of a larger, comprehensive redevelopment initiative aimed at revitalizing the historical core of Nizhny Novgorod.
