Russia`s Minister of Health, Mikhail Murashko, has announced a new historic low for the infant mortality rate. For the first half of 2025, the rate dropped to 3.6 per mille. This marks a further improvement from the 3.7 per mille reported by the ministry in July, and the 4 per mille recorded for the entirety of last year.
According to the minister, as cited by TASS, this significant reduction was achieved through a «comprehensive approach» to safeguarding maternal and child health.
In a related statement in May, Mr. Murashko highlighted that the mortality rate for children under 17 years old has more than halved over the past decade. Specifically, from 2012 to 2025, this figure saw a 61.5% decrease. Infant mortality, in particular, fell by 57% during the same period. In 2012, 16.3 thousand children under one year of age died, whereas in January-April 2025, the number was 1.1 thousand.
