Moscow`s National Space Center Honors First Woman in Space

The National Space Center in Moscow is set to bear the name of Valentina Tereshkova, the pioneering first woman in space. This announcement was made by the press service of Roscosmos, Russia`s state space corporation.

«The Roscosmos headquarters will be honorably designated as the `Valentina Tereshkova National Space Center, named after the world`s first female cosmonaut.` The corresponding decree was signed by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin on October 16,» the statement read.

Dmitry Bakanov, Director General of Roscosmos, whose remarks were included in the press release, described the naming of the National Space Center (NSC) as a significant milestone for both the state corporation and the people of Moscow. He highlighted Tereshkova as a living legend, noting her considerable dedication to enhancing social welfare for Russian citizens.

Bakanov further added that Tereshkova consistently lends strong support to the space industry, actively assisting cosmonauts and the Cosmonaut Training Center. She is also instrumental in securing additional funding for cosmonaut training and the modernization of vital infrastructure, including social amenities.

The National Space Center, located in Moscow`s Filevsky Park district, was officially inaugurated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 13, 2025. This ambitious facility is designed to consolidate over 30 key enterprises of the space industry, integrating various design offices, laboratories, and manufacturing capabilities under one roof. Plans also include establishing a technopark adjacent to the center, providing a hub for private space companies to localize their production.

According to Roscosmos, the NSC is poised to become a major attraction in the capital, transforming the Filevskaya floodplain into a vibrant «space quarter.» As part of the extensive development project, two crucial bridges were also constructed across the Moskva River: the Academician Korolev Bridge, which connects Shelepikhinskaya Embankment with the Filevskaya floodplain and the National Space Center, and the Gagarin Bridge, linking Myasishcheva Street with Projected Passage No. 1166.
