Russian Space Agency to Test New Methane Rocket with Reusable First Stage

MOSCOW. Dmitry Bakanov, the head of Roscosmos, the Russian state space corporation, announced that the testing phase for the «Amur-LNG» methane rocket, featuring a reusable first stage, is projected to span one and a half to two years. Speaking in an interview with RBC, Bakanov clarified that this extended period is essential for comprehensive modeling and refining all technical nuances to ensure the highest quality outcomes.

Bakanov emphasized that the development of a rocket`s reusable first stage is a crucial objective, as it promises to substantially lower the expenses associated with space launches. He drew a comparison to Elon Musk`s successful implementation of multi-use rocket stages, highlighting how this approach has led to «tremendous cost reductions and significant savings» in space operations.

The technical specifications for this innovative technology, popularly nicknamed «Grasshopper,» were officially endorsed in June of the current year. It has since become a top priority for the corporation. Bakanov underscored that this initiative is an integral component of a broader national project, emphasizing the imperative for its flawless execution.

The National Space Project, which received approval on June 17 from the Council under the Russian President for Strategic Development and National Projects, outlines an ambitious agenda. Its scope includes the advancement of Earth remote sensing satellite constellations, diverse communication systems (encompassing broadband internet access), drone control technologies, the creation of the Amur-LNG methane rocket, and enhancements to the precision of the GLONASS navigation system. All current federal space-related projects have now been seamlessly integrated into this comprehensive National Project. The Russian Ministry of Finance has committed approximately 4.4 trillion rubles in funding for this project, allocated until 2036.

Earlier, President Vladimir Putin reiterated Russia`s pride in its exceptional achievements in space exploration and affirmed the nation`s commitment to formulating long-term strategies in this vital domain.
