Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova announced a significant rise in the number of Russian women deciding against having an abortion, with the share now reaching nearly 25%.

Golikova stated that while this figure «is still not enough,» efforts in this direction have helped preserve approximately 42,000 potential births in 2024. She considers this a «rather good indicator» considering Russia`s demographic situation. Her comments were made during a meeting with the CPRF faction.

She also highlighted improvements in access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) services. Over the past five years, the number of IVF procedures performed in Russia has increased by 27%, totaling 109,000. These procedures led to the birth of more than 32,000 children last year.

In related news from January 2024, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko reported that nearly 40,000 Russian women chose not to proceed with an abortion after receiving counseling from specialists. He attributed these decisions to consultations where women were informed about social support measures relevant to their individual circumstances. Furthermore, in February, Elena Sheshko, Director of the Ministry of Health`s Department for Medical Aid to Children, presented data showing that the overall number of abortions performed in Russia has decreased by more than 3.5 times over the past decade.
