The Russian Ministry of Defense has reported the interception of 105 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) overnight, targeting various Russian regions and the Azov Sea waters. This large-scale drone assault led to significant infrastructure damage and minor casualties in the Krasnodar and Rostov regions.
In Krasnodar Krai, Governor Veniamin Kondratiev confirmed that drone debris struck the railway station in Timashevsk, causing a temporary power outage, which has since been rectified. A passenger train was also hit, resulting in light injuries to two individuals. While initial reports did not indicate damage to railway infrastructure, Russian Railways (RZD) later specified that overhead power lines were indeed compromised, leading to delays for 12 trains in the region. Furthermore, a «Carpet» flight restriction plan was activated over Sochi, causing the airport to close for over an hour and affecting approximately 40 inbound and outbound flights.
Similarly, in Rostov Oblast, acting Governor Yuri Slyusar stated that an explosion from a drone attack damaged a building at the Peschanokopskaya railway station. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in this incident, although ten passenger trains faced delays, a fact also confirmed by RZD. Power grids in the area were reportedly affected but were being actively repaired.
Expert Commentary on the Aftermath
Alina Tsygankova, a correspondent for «Pervy Rostovsky» TV channel, offered insights into the situation in Rostov:
Our film crews visited the station, and it seemed there weren`t an overwhelming number of people waiting. For those stuck on trains, volunteers from «Narodny Front» and local Don organizations provided water and food. Currently, information remains limited.
Beyond the railway station, were there other consequences from today`s attack? Or was it primarily the railway, and how extensive is the damage?
As far as I know, power lines were impacted, but repairs have been underway since overnight, with some partial restoration by 8 AM. Around 10 trains are delayed. Regarding residential areas, I can confirm there were no casualties.
Anton Misulis, Deputy General Director of Business FM Krasnodar, provided further context regarding the widespread nature of the attacks:
Anton Misulis, Deputy General Director of Business FM Krasnodar: «Over the past two days, especially with the ongoing negotiation process in Istanbul, drones have unfortunately reached Krasnodar Krai. Yesterday, several sites in Krasnodar Krai were targeted: in Temryuksky district, in the village of Kurchanskaya, there`s damage, including broken windows in private homes. Thankfully, no casualties were reported there. In Timashevsk, 60 kilometers from Krasnodar, drone debris damaged a passenger train car, and the railway station experienced a power outage due to the falling fragments. Two people sustained minor injuries, according to operational headquarters. The station was temporarily out of service. Rostov Oblast also saw renewed attacks, leading to further delays for more than 10 trains. Additionally, Sochi`s airport was shut down for over an hour under a `Carpet` plan, delaying approximately 40 flights. In total, eight drones were shot down overnight over Krasnodar Krai, with several more intercepted over the Black and Azov Seas.»
Following the overnight drone attacks, flight restrictions were temporarily imposed at eight airports across southern Russia. These restrictions were lifted by 6 AM. The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that a total of 105 drones were neutralized across Russian regions and the Azov Sea.
