However, experts advise against overstating the issue`s severity. These insects have long been present in southern Russia, where locals are well-acquainted with them. While wasp spiders have recently migrated to the central regions, they do not pose a life-threatening danger to humans.

Wasp spiders, scientifically known as Argiope bruennichi, have been spotted across various Russian regions, including Kaluga, Chelyabinsk, Tula, Vladimir, Bashkiria, Tatarstan, and the Moscow Oblast. Reports describe their bite as very painful, with some claims suggesting a risk of anaphylactic shock. The species is increasingly appearing in areas uncharacteristic of its usual habitat.

Media outlets cite dacha owners who report that these insects, once rare visitors, have now proliferated across their plots, expanding their presence into both southern and northern territories.

Expert Commentary

To assess the danger posed by the Argiope species and whether the current situation constitutes a threat, we spoke with Fyodor Martynovchenko, an arachnologist and researcher at the Moscow State University`s Department of Entomology:

«These spiders remain rare in the Moscow region and Moscow itself; there isn`t an invasion. Encounters with these noticeable, large spiders simply spark interest. They`ve been present in Moscow for at least two years, likely longer. The spider resembles a wasp with its yellow, white, and black stripes, similar to typical yellow-and-black wasps, though they are not directly related to wasps. They pose no danger to humans. While their bite is painful, it`s less painful than a wasp sting. The pain subsides within a few minutes, so there`s nothing to fear. One can take a painkiller or an antihistamine, like Suprastin, which is always advisable. Normally, there should be no issues. Spiders don`t bite without provocation; you`d have to grab one or clench it in your fist.»

Interviewer: «Is any prevention possible?»

Fyodor Martynovchenko: «Prevention of what? There`s no need to spray for them. Overall, they are few in number and rare compared to other spiders. They are commonly found in southern regions, such as the Rostov and Voronezh oblasts. They have only recently arrived in the Moscow region.»
