Common Scam Tactics Identified by MVD
A key warning sign is when an individual claims to reside abroad but actively seeks a partner in a very specific Russian region. According to the ministry, this is a strong indicator of potential fraudulent activity. A prevalent scheme involves scammers proposing a meeting, only for «unforeseen circumstances» to arise—such as an alleged detention at a border—after which they demand money for «bail» or other urgent expenses.
Furthermore, previous reports have detailed other deceptive schemes frequently encountered on dating platforms. These include propositions to invest in cryptocurrency, promising high returns but ultimately leading to significant losses. Russian women who have fallen victim to these scams have shared their distressing experiences, collectively losing hundreds of thousands of rubles.
The MVD urges all users of dating sites to exercise extreme caution, thoroughly verify identities where possible, and be exceptionally wary of any requests for money, especially when presented under unusual or urgent pretenses.
