Preview Russians Warned of New SMS Verification Fraud Scheme

Scammers are employing a new deceptive strategy targeting Russian residents: they call victims, claiming a package from an online marketplace has arrived, and then solicit an SMS verification code. RIA Novosti has issued a warning about this emerging fraud, urging citizens to remain vigilant.

The scheme operates as follows: an imposter contacts an individual, asserting that a parcel is awaiting them from an online shopping platform, and inquires about their preferred delivery method. Should the victim deny expecting any packages, the fraudster persuades them to «verify» the information, subsequently asking for a code sent via SMS.

If the scammer successfully obtains this crucial code, they can gain unauthorized access to the user`s marketplace account. This access, in turn, grants them entry to the victim`s sensitive banking details, potentially leading to significant financial loss.

This is not the only active fraud; previously, there were reports of attempts to steal funds from Russians using a Telegram bot disguised as an official «Gosuslugi» (Public Services) portal form, highlighting the diverse tactics used by cybercriminals.
