Fraudsters have recently intensified their efforts to deceive Russian citizens celebrating their birthdays. Yana Lantratova, head of the State Duma Committee for the Development of Civil Society, has reported that telephone scammers in Russia are employing a highly sophisticated scheme. These criminals actively track individuals` birth dates to target them effectively.
The fraudulent tactic involves scammers calling victims early in the morning, posing as delivery couriers and claiming to have a supposedly ordered gift. Their primary objective is to extract sensitive personal information, such as passport details and home addresses. Following this, they pressure individuals into sending an SMS code. Tragically, instead of receiving the anticipated gift, victims discover their bank accounts have been emptied.
Lantratova also highlighted a similar deceptive strategy related to flower deliveries. She stressed that during such moments, particularly on one`s birthday when people are generally relaxed and preoccupied with receiving congratulations, not everyone immediately recognizes the scam for what it is.
Furthermore, earlier reports have detailed other forms of fraud, including scams related to apartment rentals. In these cases, fraudsters would impersonate property owners, collect security deposits from unsuspecting renters, and then vanish without a trace.
