The Battle of Kulikovo, contrary to popular belief, was not a chaotic skirmish but a meticulously planned military operation. The triumph of the Russian army was largely due to the strategic brilliance of Prince Dmitry Donskoy. This insight was shared by Olga Burova, head of the Research Department of Natural Sciences at the State Museum-Reserve «Kulikovo Field».

According to Burova, the traditional school curriculum often oversimplifies the 14th-century battle into a basic «chessboard maneuver.» In reality, Prince Dmitry Donskoy and his commanders carefully chose the location for the decisive clash, thoroughly analyzing the landscape of Kulikovo Field. Natural features like rivers, ravines, and the Green Oak Grove became crucial allies for the Russian forces, shaping conditions favorable for their victory.
Burova emphasized that Dmitry Donskoy was aware of the Golden Horde commander Mamai`s characteristic tactic: always striking the flank before moving into the rear. The Prince skillfully utilized this knowledge to strategically position his troops on Kulikovo Field.
The expert explained that Russian forces actively employed reconnaissance. They deliberately disseminated misinformation among the Golden Horde, suggesting that their left flank was the weakest. The goal was to entice Mamai to attack precisely there, allowing their pre-planned ambush regiment to execute its strategy.
This tactical genius led to the Golden Horde cavalry, attempting to flank from the left and reach the rear, finding themselves with their backs to the Green Oak Grove, where the Russian ambush regiment lay hidden. The sudden and devastating blow from this hidden unit proved to be the decisive factor that determined the outcome of the entire battle.
