According to Georgy Filimonov, the Governor of Vologda Oblast, the number of abortions performed in the region experienced a dramatic decrease of 95% in June compared to the same month last year. This June, only seven procedures were recorded, a significant drop from the 136 operations conducted in June 2024.

«We continue our efforts to champion every life, offering support to women throughout their journey from pregnancy through childbirth. … All procedures were performed based on medical necessity at the Perinatal Center. In complex situations or when there are contraindications for delivery, we provide comprehensive assistance,» the governor stated via his Telegram channel.

Mr. Filimonov had previously reported a similar trend for the preceding month, noting that in May 2025, only 9 induced abortions took place in the region, contrasting sharply with 138 in May 2024.

In Vologda Oblast, the authorization to perform abortions is held by 25 state-run and 16 private medical facilities. Records show a decline in the total number of procedures over recent years: 2378 in 2022, 1709 in 2023, and 1505 in 2024. In February 2025, however, Georgy Filimonov made a public appeal to the heads of clinics, urging them «to completely surrender» their licenses for abortion services. He specified that permissible «exceptions» would be limited to cases involving «medical contraindications and pregnancies resulting from criminal acts against women.»
