Within hours of the fire igniting, the blaze edged closer to homes surrounding the two tourist resorts, which are typically bustling with visitors during the summer months. The region is characterized by easily flammable pine forests. According to a fire brigade spokesperson, the flames approached the beaches alarmingly closely, making evacuation by sea the only feasible escape route.

Footage from Greek broadcaster ERT depicted dozens of people adrift on pontoons in the water, awaiting rescue as smoke obscured the sky above the resorts. Additionally, traffic jams occurred on the roads as many attempted to flee the flames in Fourka and Siviri via land.
