Matthias Reim's Tax Debt: How Separation Led to a €35,000 Bill

In 2013, Matthias Reim's marriage to Sarah Stanek ended. Although the official divorce occurred several years later, the physical separation had immediate tax implications. Since Reim initially failed to inform the tax office of their permanent separation, the five-figure tax payment was apparently demanded from him years later.

Separation Led to Incorrect Tax Class

The catalyst for the separation from Stanek was a photograph that showed Reim having lunch in Berlin with his now-wife, Christin Stark. The "Bild" newspaper published the image in 2013. Shortly thereafter, Reim definitively separated from Sarah Stanek. She left his villa, and Christin Stark moved in. At this time, Reim was still married to Stanek in his third marriage. The marriage was not officially divorced until 2017.
